TUIA

TUIA

This is a tree original from North America and Europe. It was brought to Brazil during the colonial times and it quickly spread widely across the country. The botanical genus Thuja, belonging to the family Cupressaceae, is composed of five species of trees popularly known as Tuias, being part of a group of trees called conifers, in which also they include the pines of the genus Pinus, the
araucarias and the redwoods.
Although this tree is commonly used in decorations, specially during the Christmas time, Tuia also has medicinal properties for humans and animals. It is used in curating pulmonary diseases such as asthma.
Tuia, also called Tree of Life or Cypress, is widely used for ornamental purposes. Because it is a compact pine tree, it is ideal to carry out the Christmas tree at the end of the year. It is a plant that symbolizes fraternization.
The leaves of the various species of Tuias tend to be quite aromatic, being used in the production of essential oils, which were already part of the religious rituals practiced by the North American Indians for centuries. The thiourea chemical compound, present in the oil extracted from Thuia occidenthalis (Tuia apple) is responsible for the pleasant fragrance that resembles this fruit, and is currently widely used for therapeutic purposes. There are also Tuias whose leaves exude an intense aroma of lemon, such as the Dutch Tuia (Cupressus macrocarpa).
Because it is a miniature pine, the Tuia is ideal to be grown in small spaces, including pots. It is a fairly tough, long-lived plant that can be used as a natural Christmas tree for years on end.
