Self-care: What's it all about?

by Simply Nature April 11, 2020 1 Comment

Do you remember your primary school experience with recess?
|
You were released from the clutches of conformity with demands to sit still and pay attention while the teacher, authority figure, was teaching the curriculum for the day. When the recess bell would ring, you would jump out of your chair and run out into the sunshine, where there was a playground to do what you loved to do. It felt like hours out there, but it was maybe 30-45 minutes of play.
|
As we venture into adulthood, our recess is taken away and we are required to fire on all cylinders for an indefinite period. The only reprieve we have is our sleep, which is often interrupted by pent up stress from the day. Social media portrays self-care as a glass of wine after a long day, a bubble bath with little fingers reaching under the door asking for ‘mommy’, or a ‘she shed’ to escape to.

Other forms of self-care you may see are vacation trips, packed full of excursions, an ice-cold beer on the beach, or fishing on an isolated lake. These are all forms of self-care that we, as a society, have learned to utilize for re-balancing our inner chaos.

What happens when this is all taken away, and we are left to ourselves, the noise in our head and our environment, and no where to go?
We are faced with this predicament, this very moment, as we are forced to slow down as a species, place our traditional self-care practices aside, and think about the greater good of humanity. Although this may seem like it’s ‘no big deal’ for the short-term, with Netflix to binge watch and Amazon sales; when all of this loses its luster, we are left with ourselves.
|
As intimidating as this may seem, this is a grand opportunity to get to know ourselves all over again. Many individuals don’t get this opportunity, until far later in life or when a situation arises in their life that places everything at a halt. What this global pandemic has given us, is the gift of the self.

You may notice aches and pains, underlying anxiety, or a propensity to overeat in this time. These are all indicators of your body communicating with you, to slow down and listen. Self-care is a great tool to utilize in discovering what your body is saying to you.
Over the course of this time that we must slow down and stay in, we will be giving  you Self-Care/Self-Healing strategies that you can utilize anywhere, anytime. Meanwhile, we will leave you with this beautiful quote by Lalah Delia: “self-care is how you take the power back.”. Take your inner power back and watch your environment shift in the direction that you desire.
